14th Annual School of Public Health Poster and Awards Day

Eligible individuals include all SPH students from any program (BA, MPH, MS/MA, PhD, DrPH), as well as students from IHRP whose primary mentor is SPH faculty. All projects should identify a SPH faculty mentor. Students are also encouraged to present their poster for other events such as capstones or external conferences.

Deadlines for Registration

Registration must be completed by 5:00 PM on March 11, 2019. Late submissions cannot be accepted. The registration process includes abstract submission. To register, see below.

Abstract Requirements

Abstracts should be no more than 2500 characters (including spaces).


Elements of abstracts and posters may include the following:

Contextual information/Problem definition/Rationale for study or evaluation


Goals/Objectives/Choice of a particular solution for evaluation


Design/Procedures for data collection/Procedures for implementation

Presentation Requirements

Students must be available for judging during the two hour open presentation session from 9:00 - 11:00 AM on Friday, April 12th. All presenters must be present at their assigned stations during the judging period. Seating will be provided. Students should prepare and deliver a short 2-minute oral presentation about their poster for the judges. For collaborative posters, it is highly recommended for all group members to be present during the judging period.

Online students must be prepared to set aside a 10 minute window from 9-11:00AM on Friday, April 12th to present their poster via video conference.  It is strongly preferred the online student be available via email or phone to answer follow up questions from the judges during the 9-11:00am judging period.  Presenting via video conference is only available for online students, traditonal students much present in person. 

Oral presentations will be evaluated based on how well the student is able to concisely convey the information on the poster and his/her ability to answer questions from the faculty judges. In addition, each poster will be judged on its content and format. No audiovisual equipment is permitted for presentations, but hand-outs are acceptable.

The recommended dress for poster competition participants is business or business casual attire. If at all feasible, students should also plan to be available for photos with their poster in the Gym from 2:00 - 2:30 PM. These photos are used for winner announcements and other SPH promotional materials.

Poster Size Requirements

There are no poster size specifications for the competition. The default size for posters printed for Poster and Awards Day will be 3x5 feet unless a different size is specifically requested. Using posters presented at other venues is encouraged.

Poster Set-Up & Removal

Students should plan to set up posters in the SPH Gym between 12:00 - 3:00 PM on Thursday, April 11th. Posters must be removed by participants no later than 5:30 PM on Friday, April 12th.



If you plan to use SPH Poster Printing Services to print your poster, visit the website to access all the necessary information and supporting documents.


One poster per entry will be printed free of charge for Poster and Awards Day. For free posters, backgrounds must be white. Color backgrounds will be charged an additional $25. Reprints may be accommodated (given reasonable turnaround time) for an additional $25. Poster tubes can be purchased for $5.

Poster Development Workshop

A poster development workshop will be scheduled in early March. Students are highly encouraged to attend. Email if you would like to be notified when the workshop is posted. 

Poster Due Dates

The deadline to submit poster files and requisition forms for printing is March 22, 2019 at 5pm.

Late posters will not be accepted. If you are not able to submit your poster file and requisition form by this date, you will need to make arrangements to print at an outside vender (e.g., FedEx). Advisors and/or mentors will most likely need to review and approve of the content of your poster, so make sure to build this window into your overall timeline for poster preparation and printing.

Submitting Posters for Printing

Submit your poster file and requisition form to by your given deadline. Posters should be submitted both as a PowerPoint (.ppt) and Adobe PDF file. The requestor is responsible for proofing the poster (i.e., checking for spelling and alignment errors) and adhering to guidelines.

Posters should include the SPH logo in the top left-hand corner. You can download the image at  Choose the most appropriate SPH logo, save the image file onto your local drive, and insert as an image into the PowerPoint poster file. The template available on the website already contains the UIC SPH logo.
